Aikido, the modern martial art!

Aikido is an effective, nonviolent system of self-defense. In fact, many police agencies throughout the world include aikido techniques in their arrest tactics training. Yet the founder of aikido, Moreihei Ueshiba Sensei, talked of his creation as the art of peace and reconciliation. He often commented that the primary goal of aikido was to make better human beings.

Last night was my first ever training with Takeshi Yamashima Shihan and I was very impressed with his aikido and his gracious accessibility to students of all levels. After 'taking falls' from Yamashima Sensei one participant commented, "He had a hold of my entire skeleton." Someone else said that he was "softy powerful!" I took quite a bit of ukemi (attacking, being moved / thrown) his touch was light, his heart very open and his center very dense yet expansive.

I warmly encourage you to join us on the mat with Yamashima Sensei... you won't be disappointed!

Summer Camp in the Rockies 2010

On the last week of July Boulder Aikikai hosted its 30th Annual Summer Camp. It was a wonderful week of training, hanging out with old friends, meeting new friends, breathing in the mountains, eating, sleeping and a little sightseeing. Many kudos to Boulder Aikikai for putting on a truly spectacular camp!

At last year's camp I took lots of photos with my newly aquired camera. This year, not so many. This gallery includes a couple of outdoor training shots, a number of photos taken on Friday evening just before we headed downtown for the big dinner party, a few pics taken at the party, quite a number of images taken at Saturday morning's 'photo-op' and a few shots taken though the car window as we made our way back to the Denver Airport. Enjoy!
