Welcome to Aiki Zenshin Dojo

Aikido, the modern martial art!

Aikido is an effective, nonviolent system of self-defense. In fact, many police agencies throughout the world include aikido techniques in their arrest tactics training. Yet the founder of aikido, Moreihei Ueshiba Sensei, talked of his creation as the art of peace and reconciliation. He often commented that the primary goal of aikido was to make better human beings.

At Aiki Zenshin Dojo we strive to honor the vision of Ueshiba Sensei. I hope that you will take time to check out our web site and the links that we have included. If you have any questions, feel free to send e-mail or give me a call. Foremost, I cordially invite you to visit our Dojo, observe any of our classes, and get a feeling for our community.

Image My computer didn't crash, I still have all my fingers and remember how to type (using more than two fingers), and I haven't been called away on a secret mission.  I've simply been so busy with misc dojo activities and life stuff that I haven't gotten around to posting here since early September!  At times I get pretty frustrated by my inability to keep up on so many fronts.  When it comes to my delinquency in posting our photo galleries, I get to feeling especially frustrated and saddened.  Jason, our in house volunteer photographer, puts a huge amount of time and effort into documenting our events.  I feel so incredibly grateful for his contributions and I want 'you' to enjoy his creativity. I have quite a bit of catching up to do yet I'm giving my best to getting all of our 2009 Events posted by the end of the year!  Now there's a commitment made public Smile!

This gallery features Harrison Chou, Jeremiah Nguyen, Chloe Retika, Baotran Trinh, Liilian Tsai, YenVy Ngo and Mary Wang.  Beautiful images by Jason Tsuyemura.

High in the sky… returning from Austin…
Sunday, 13 September 2009

I’m about half way home and have been looking down on storm clouds for most of the flight.  Austin received some impressive downpours this morning, yet the weather cleared a bit by my take off time and the assent was only slightly bumpy.

I had a truly wonderful time with my South Austin Aikido buddies and visitors from dojos in San Antonio, Houston and Mission, TX .  The weekend seemed to move at warp speed.  On Thursday evening, with a twinkle in my eye, I ‘announced’ that my goal for the seminar was to take them to the edges of their comfort zones and I believe that I succeeded Wink.  I chatted on the phone with Todd Kammerer while I was waiting to board the plane and he commented as to how “spanked” he was.  He thought that the mental exertion perhaps tired him out as much as the spirited physical training.  I have to agree, I’m pretty whooped too!  As a group we examined our belief systems regarding forms, energetic connection, power / strength, physical-ness and the concept of ‘aiki’.  [Cool…just flew over the Grand Canyon.]  To examine any belief system we need to allow room for other possibilities and temporarily suspend the comfort of our ‘knowing.’  This process can be exhilarating and stressful.  We definitely surfed our edges and as the wave-riders say, “it’s all good!”
