| Welcome to Aiki Zenshin Dojo |
Aikido, the modern martial art! Aikido is an effective, nonviolent system of self-defense. In fact, many police agencies throughout the world include aikido techniques in their arrest tactics training. Yet the founder of aikido, Moreihei Ueshiba Sensei, talked of his creation as the art of peace and reconciliation. He often commented that the primary goal of aikido was to make better human beings. At Aiki Zenshin Dojo we strive to honor the vision of Ueshiba Sensei. I hope that you will take time to check out our web site and the links that we have included. If you have any questions, feel free to send e-mail or give me a call. Foremost, I cordially invite you to visit our Dojo, observe any of our classes, and get a feeling for our community. | Aikido of Modesto’s “Weapons Seminar by the River”_ installment 2. |
|
A week had passed since I posted my first review on this seminar. Many of the details of the weekend are fading a bit, yet many wonderful memories drift through every now and again. I believe that the ‘harmony’ of the stunningly beautiful natural setting called us to embrace a more expansive sense of self which facilitated putting aside our stylistic differences and entering the realm of creative communal exploration.
Five instructors, all embracing ‘aiki principles’, taught a class session on both days. Over the course of the weekend we explored paired jo and sword / bokken routines, used short lengths of rope as defenses against open-handed strikes, and practiced disarming a gunman. After lunch on Saturday a number of participants spent time on the shooting range at the other end of the property. Later a group gathered for tameshigiri, ‘live-blade’ target cutting. In contrast to all the weapons work, many of us ‘warriors’ also took advantage of the opportunity to spend some time in a pasture ‘blending’ with ten very curious foals and their moms. Beyond the details of the physical training, a common ‘spiritual theme’ seemed to resonate through the instructors. Repeatedly we were encouraged to embrace our intuitive ‘aiki’ calling, to relax into learning, and to give up the idea of ‘fighting’ and open to the transformative possibilities that O’Sensei envisioned. It was truly a stellar weekend! Thank you, Ken Nisson Sensei and the students of Aikido of Modesto. Thank you to all the instructors for sharing your knowledge and vision. And a HUGE thank you to Connie Arthur_ your thoughtful planning and attention to our needs simply exemplary! The “Weapons Seminar” instructors:
