This was the first target cutting class that we have held at our dojo. Steve Osawa Sensei led the class drawing material from his many years of sword training, both kenjutsu and kendo. This was an invitation only class for students who have been consistently attending our weapons classes. Osawa Sensei and I were the only ones who had any previous cutting experience. I believe that most aikido students, after years of bokken training, wonder what it would be like to cut with a 'live blade'. The students who participated in this class found out as to whether their bokken skills really translated into cutting. Everyone felt that this was an extremely valuable experience... and inspirationally awesome as well! This class will carry on as a monthly event.
I am extremely thankful to Osawa Sensei for providing the inspiration, knowledge and skill that made this class possible and successful. He also graciously allowed the students to use his personal swords and generously covered all the cost of the targets!
I also want to thank Chip Presley for building the most impressive target stand that I have ever seen.
The images were taken by Jason Tsuyemura with his new camera. He wasn't able to stay for the entire class so we do not have pics of everyone who attended. And to be honest, I have only included pics of our successful cuts ;-). Thank you, Jason!
